Quote of the Day : June 16th - Old Tom Morris and Phil Mickelson

QUOTE OF THE DAY: June 16th

Old Tom Morris and Phil Mickelson

Two four-time Major-winning golfers were born on this day.

Thomas Mitchell Morris, Sr. was born in 1821 at the home of golf St. Andrews in Scotland. Known as Old Tom Morris, he won The Open Championship in 1861, 1862, 1864 and 1867

Old Tom's most famous quotation was in reference to the locals at St. Andrews, "We were all born with webbed feet and a golf club in our hand here."

On looking through a telescope for the first time and seeing the moon  - "Faith, sir! She's terrible full o' bunkers."

"Old Tom is the most remote point to which we can carry back our genealogical inquiries into golfing style, so that we may virtually accept him as the common golfing ancestor who has stamped the features of his style most distinctly on his descendants."
Horace G. Hutchinson (1900)

Phil Mickelson was born in 1970 in San Diego, California. 'Lefty' holds the record for most Majors won by a left-hander: three Masters' titles in 2004, 2006 and 2010 with a US PGA title in 2005.

Some great quotations from Phil ...

"The object of golf is not just to win. It is to play like a gentleman, and win."

"I hate to play a tournament in which I'm not contending. It's just not any fun for me."

“There's an old saying, 'Beware of the ailing golfer. And whenever he's complaining, we know we're in trouble.”

“The more you study the course, the more you appreciate what a great test it is.”
